The delightful Hamlet of Salehurst is an old Saxon settlement that is mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086 AD), as having been destroyed by the Normans before the Battle of Hastings in 1066 (Battle). It is believed that the illustration of Saxon homes being destroyed on the Bayeux Tapestry was based on events surrounding Salehurst (source: www.villagenet.co.uk). This wonderful Hamlet enjoys its own Church and a wonderful Country Inn with a Restaurant and an open log fire to keep ones toes warm in winter.

The nearby Village of Robertsbridge, a charming English Village with a plethora of attractive beamed period properties flanking the High Street, provides further amenities. Robertsbridge is an old settlement founded in about 1176, when the Cistercian Abbey was built on the site of the current War Memorial. Remnants of the old Chapel Cellar from the Monastery can still be seen in the basement of one of the houses in the High Street. The Village has many historic references including the first Cub Scout Pack started in Robertsbridge by Baden Powell himself. This popular Village has a good selection of shops including a Convenience Store, Farm Shop, Post Office, Chemist, Natwest Bank, Hairdresser, Florist, Veterinary Surgery, Chinese Take-away, Fish and Chip Shop, an excellent Indian Restaurant and three Country Inns. The local area has plenty of interesting places to visit including the historic town of Battle with its famous Abbey, the battlements of Bodiam Castle with its ancient Moat, and the wonderful Cinque Port of Rye. Battle is within easy driving distance and is infamous for the defeat of King Harold at the hands of William the Conqueror on nearby Senlac Hill in 1066. Excellent Hotels, good Restaurants and many places of interest are to be enjoyed locally. For a more comprehensive range of shops, Royal Tunbridge Wells is situated 15 miles North West. Sailing, Fishing, Rowing, Walking and Horse Riding is available at nearby Bewl Water Reservoir, along with Golf at Battle, Rye, Lamberhurst, Ticehurst, and Sedlescombe to name but a few.

Schooling in the area is excellent in both the State and Private sectors. Independent Schools include Battle Abbey School, Claremont, Claverham, Eastbourne College, Frewen College, Tonbridge and Vinehall. There are also a range of Comprehensive Schools in the area including over ten Church of England Schools, Bexhill High School, Holmewood House and Uplands Community College.

Robertsbridge and Battle Railway Stations provide a good rail service to London. The nearby A21 connects to the Motorway network providing access to London and Gatwick with easy access also being provided to towns such as Ashford, Royal Tunbridge Wells, Eastbourne, Brighton and Dover.
